The Sanday Surgery(Orkney)

The surgery is in a Victorian building in Lady, the village in the centre of the island. It was erected by subscription of the population to house the island doctor in the 19th century and now comprises 2 consulting rooms, a waiting room, a dispensary and an interview room for visiting therapists. A wheelchair ramp has been installed and wheelchair access is available.

Emergencies and Out of Hours:

Basic A+E services are provided on island by the  Doctor and Nurse who are on duty 24/7. Together with the volunteer driven ambulance they also provide a first response to more serious  emergencies such as heart cases and road traffic accidents. It should be borne in mind however that the average time for an emergency transfer via helicopter is 2 hours – on a remote island prevention is better than cure !
