Description

Dr George Petrou is a Senior Visiting Medical Officer with Mid North Coast Local Health District since 2008. His expertise includes laparoscopic abdominal wall hernia repair, laparoscopic anti-reflux surgery, bariatric surgery, liver resection surgery, gastroscopy and colonoscopy.

Dr Petrou was awarded MBBS, BSc(med) from the University of NSW in 1996. He then spent his early years in residency training.

Dr Petrou completed Advanced General Surgical Training through South West Sydney Area Health and was awarded a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College Of Surgeons in 2005. During his training he excelled in trauma, care of the critically ill and advanced laparoscopic surgery of the gastrointestinal tract, abdominal wall and biliary tree. The Gastrointestinal Endoscopic Society of Australia recognizes his training in both gastroscopy and colonoscopy.

During fellowship training Dr Petrou developed an interest in liver resection surgery for the treatment of colorectal cancer, liver metastases and primary liver cancer. He pursued post fellowship specialized training in this area. In 2005, he worked as the hepatobiliary fellow at the Royal Melbourne Hospital. In 2006, Hepatobiliary Fellow St George Hospital and then Lecturer UNSW in Hepatobiliary Surgery at the St George Hospital in 2007.

Dr Petrou continues to perform liver resection surgery at the Port Macquarie Base Hospital. He is currently the only regional liver surgeon performing high volume liver surgery in Australia. He is hoping to formally publish the results and outcomes of his patients in the near future.

Dr Petrou started his private practice known as PORT LAPSURGERY in February 2008, specialising in laparoscopic hernia repair, laparoscopic hiatal hernia repair and laparoscopic cholecystectomy and bile duct exploration. He has the leading experience in laparoscopic hernia repair on the Mid North Coast NSW.

Because of the obesity epidemic affecting regional NSW, Dr Petrou has also added Bariatric Surgery. His Bariatric practice is called MID NORTH COAST BARIATRIC & HERNIA CENTRE. Dr Petrou specialises in Sleeve Gastrectomy and Gastric Bypass Surgery and performs these surgeries in high volume at the Port Macquarie Private Hospital.

Dr Petrou’s surgical expertise is recognised nationally and internationally. Dr Petrou is an active member of the International Federation for the Surgery of Obesity and Metabolic Disorders, International Hepatopancreaticobiliary Association, Asia Pacific Hepatopancreaticobiliary Association and the Society of American Gastrointestinal Endoscopic Surgeons.
